1. If you were to write a Travel diary from Brazil, what would your title be? What does this title mean to you?

The title would be: “The most beautiful chaos“. In Rio, where I was born, two contrasting worlds coexist: a huge city (5 times bigger than Milan) with high skyscrapers and a business center where everyone seems to be running against time and, on the other side of the street, the dense nature full of wild life that makes us understand that time, instead, moves slowly. It’s also a place full of social problems, where even the people who suffer the most never stop answering “everything’s fine” when we ask them how you are. A unique place that looks like one of those vacation spots but is instead a super active and complex metropolis.

2. If you were in Brazil right now, who would you send a postcard to? What message would you write?

I would send it to Lorenzo Taini. He is a neighbor of mine and an artist who shares my same passion for lines. I probably would have invited him to do an art residency in Brazil and also told him that here are all the colors he is looking for in his work.

3. What is one of your objects that reminds you of Brazil? What is the memory related to it? Can you send us a photo taken by you?

I really like a small drawing I made many years ago and brought with me to Milan. This object represents this “naive” desire to illustrate what our eyes see rather than to convey how we feel in that moment. The most interesting part is that, at some point, this little drawing managed to become a memory of that instant for me. But I think it’s such a special object just for me. Design is sometimes like that. Beauty is related to experiences that sometimes precede the object.

Awarded as the Next Generation Designer of The Year 2017 by Wallpaper* and Officine Panerai, Gustavo Martini was born in Rio de Janeiro – Brazil. Having lived most of his life there, Martini has a strong sense of connection to the city that he believes is characterized by two contrasting worlds: the metropolis with all the chaos and vertical gray landscape along with the surrounding rainforest and hidden waterfalls. His creations explore these contrasts and transport these different realities. Working with a strong identity, he has become known for his ability to produce both products and art installations around the world. His greatest passion is to create with complete freedom of expression. Martini explores concepts, shapes and volumes to generate an experimental language that creates a unique style that can be easily recognized. In 2016 Gustavo Martini moved his studio to Milan after completing a Master’s degree at Istituto Marangoni where he also became an I’M ambassador for the design school. His latest achievements include collaborations with Giulio Cappellini, the exhibition of his first sculpture at the Arsenale di Venezia, participation in art markets such as Pisa and special locations such as the noble palace of the Floridi Doria Pamphilj family. He also presented an installation for the Alcantara company in the renowned MAXXI museum in Rome.
